AI citation tracking tools: 8 compared on what they help you fix
Eight AI citation tracking tools compared on cited URLs and domains, what each does when citations drop, entry price and trial.

AI citation tracking tools record which pages ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite when they answer questions in your category, and whether your own pages are among them. We compared eight as of 29 October 2026: Asky, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Semrush, Ahrefs, Profound, Scrunch and SE Ranking. Asky comes first because it turns citation data into the fix: it shows every cited page by domain and URL and ranks what to do when yours drop. From €399 a month, it also refreshes and publishes the page to Webflow, WordPress or Sanity.
Citation tracking needs its own tool because AI engines rarely cite the same pages that rank, even from the same sites. For commercial questions, only 0.1% to 0.6% of the pages AI engines cited were in Google's top 10 for the same question (University of Toronto). Every fact about each tool below comes from its own website, checked on 29 October 2026.
| Tool | Best for | Cited URLs and domains on the entry plan | When citations drop | Entry price, monthly | Free trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asky | Finding why citations dropped and fixing it | Yes, grouped by domain and URL with the brands each page names | Ranks the next actions; refreshes and publishes the page from €399 (Scale) | €99/month, 50 prompts | 7 days |
| Otterly.AI | Daily citation checks on a small budget | Yes, with link position over time | Recommendations, 3 a week on Lite | $29/month, 15 prompts | 7 days, no card |
| Peec AI | Telling retrieved sources from citations | Domains and URLs pages, per its docs | Ranked actions and an exportable draft | $95/month, 50 prompts | Offered; length not stated |
| Semrush | Teams already on Semrush | Yes, every cited domain and URL | "Get mentions" suggestions per cited page | $99/month, 25 prompts | None on the AI toolkit |
| Ahrefs | Cited pages next to backlink data | Top cited pages and domains for custom prompts | No drop alerts described | $50/month custom prompt package; Lite $129 with 5 prompts daily | None |
| Profound | Enterprise teams that want an agent on it | Yes, every cited source classified by type | Suggestions name pages losing citations | Custom (Enterprise) | 7 days |
| Scrunch | Citation share by owner | Yes, filterable by domain or URL | Insights and recommendations | $250/month per brand, 125 prompts | 7 days |
| SE Ranking | A standalone AI visibility tool with a 75-prompt entry plan | Yes, URLs and domains views | Gaps to turn into content or outreach | $89/month, 75 prompts (SE Visible) | 10 days (SE Visible) |
What criteria should an AI citation tracking tool meet?
It should show you every page an answer cites, who owns it and what to do when yours disappear. We checked each tool against four tests.
- URL and domain level. Knowing that a domain is cited is not enough. You need the exact page, so you know what to match or improve.
- Who else is cited. The tool should show which competitors and third-party sites appear in the same answers.
- Change over time. A citation report without history cannot tell you what dropped this month.
- A next step. The tool should tell you what to do about a lost citation, and ideally help you do it.
Why are your pages getting cited less in AI answers?
Two common causes: the engines found a page that answers the question better, or they can no longer read yours. AI engines pick sources on their own terms. Nearly 30% of the domains cited in AI Overviews did not appear on the first page of results at all (Internet Measurement Conference 2026).
Diagnose a drop in four checks:
- See which pages the engines cite now instead of yours.
- Check that AI crawlers still reach your page.
- Look for a technical issue that blocks retrieval.
- Compare your page with the new sources and refresh what is missing.
Asky runs all four in one place, with cited sources by URL, AI crawler logs and a technical audit of over 100 issue types. It then ranks the fix. From €399 a month, it refreshes the page and publishes the change to Webflow, WordPress or Sanity, changing only the fields and blocks that need it.
1. Asky: best for finding why citations dropped and fixing it
Overview
Asky is an AI-native SEO and GEO platform from Stockholm that closes the loop from insight to execution. It tracks how AI engines mention and cite your brand, explains where the citations come from and ranks the work most likely to win them back.
Strengths
- Asky groups every cited page by domain and URL with the brands it names, so you see which sources feature competitors and not you.
- Each answer shows in full with every cited source, beside the citation rate of your own domains.
- Sources that cite competitors but not you become outreach targets on Asky's Third-party page.
- AI crawler logs and the technical audit show whether AI crawlers can still reach and read the pages that lost citations.
- Asky refreshes the pages worth refreshing and publishes the change to Webflow, WordPress or Sanity, changing only the fields and blocks that need it.
Weaknesses
- Asky is not a standalone backlink index, so teams that track link profiles in depth keep a backlink tool beside it.
- It is built for teams that act on citation data, so it is more than you need if you only want a monthly export.
Best for
Teams that want to know why a page lost its AI citations and get the fix shipped, not just reported.
2. Otterly.AI: best for daily citation checks on a small budget
Overview
Otterly.AI, based in Austria, is an AI search monitoring tool. It checks cited URLs and domains daily and tracks where your link sits in each answer over time.
Strengths
- The Lite plan includes citation source tracking, link citation analysis and domain ranking from $29 a month.
- Link position over time shows whether your page is moving up or down in an answer's sources.
- Prioritized recommendations come with reasoning and a suggested action, managed as a to-do list.
Weaknesses
- Lite tracks 15 prompts and gives three recommendations a week; Standard and up give unlimited recommendations.
- Its pages describe no CMS publishing, so the fixes happen in your own tools.
Best for
Small teams that want daily citation data and a short weekly to-do list for a low price.
3. Peec AI: best for telling retrieved sources from citations
Overview
Peec AI, based in Berlin, is an AI search analytics tool. Its Sources section has separate Domains and URLs pages and separates sources an engine retrieved from those it referenced.
Strengths
- The split between retrieved and referenced sources shows pages an engine read but did not credit.
- Actions rank opportunities across your own pages, third-party mentions and wrong claims.
- Content optimization turns an action into an editable draft.
Weaknesses
- Its docs describe exporting drafts as HTML or text rather than publishing to a CMS.
- Its pricing table marks citation features by plan with icons only, so confirm what the Starter plan includes during the trial.
Best for
Analysts who want to see which pages engines read, which they cite and where to act first.
4. Semrush: best for teams already on Semrush
Overview
Semrush, based in Boston, sells AI tracking as the AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 a month for 25 prompts. Its Prompt Tracking Sources report lists every cited domain and URL.
Strengths
- Each cited source is labeled as yours, a competitor's, social, a knowledge base or other.
- A Diff column shows the change in your brand mentions for each source since the last update.
- "Get mentions" suggestions are tailored to each cited page's category.
Weaknesses
- Its knowledge base describes no automated alert when citations drop.
- The AI Visibility Toolkit has no free trial.
Best for
Semrush customers who want citation data in the account they already use for SEO.
5. Ahrefs: best for cited pages next to backlink data
Overview
Ahrefs, the SEO toolset, tracks AI answers with Brand Radar. Custom prompts come as a standalone package from $50 a month or inside its plans from Lite.
Strengths
- Reports identify the top cited pages and domains, plus pages an engine found but did not cite.
- Custom prompts start at $50 a month on their own, and Lite at $129 includes five prompts checked daily.
- Citation data sits next to Ahrefs' backlink and keyword data.
Weaknesses
- No recommendations or alerts on citation drops are described for Brand Radar; Ahrefs points to a separate product for that.
- There is no free trial, only Ahrefs Free and a free AI visibility checker.
Best for
SEO teams that already live in Ahrefs and want cited pages beside their link data.
6. Profound: best for enterprise teams that want an agent on it
Overview
Profound, based in New York, offers brands a free 7-day trial and custom Enterprise contracts. Its citations view classifies every cited source and shows citation share by platform, topic and prompt.
Strengths
- Sources are classified as owned, competitor, earned media, PR wire, social or institution.
- Its AI Marketer suggestions name pages losing citations and topics where a competitor leads.
- The agent drafts work, asks for approval and can stage rewrites in the CMS.
Weaknesses
- For brands, no self-serve paid plan is listed; buying means a custom Enterprise contract.
- The trial has no history and no export.
Best for
Enterprise teams that buy on a custom contract and want an agent to act on citation changes.
7. Scrunch: best for citation share by owner
Overview
Scrunch, now a Sitecore company, prices its Core plan at $250 a month per brand, with 125 prompts. Its Citations dashboard splits citation share between your brand, competitors and third parties.
Strengths
- Top cited domains, filterable by domain or URL, with an influence score for each source.
- Citation share by owner shows how much of the conversation third parties control.
- Insights flag meaningful shifts and say what to do about them.
Weaknesses
- Core includes one page optimization a month.
- Each tracked brand needs its own subscription, according to its FAQ.
Best for
Brands that want to see how much of their AI citations they own versus competitors and publishers.
8. SE Ranking: best for a standalone tool with a 75-prompt entry plan
Overview
SE Ranking sells AI tracking as SE Visible, a standalone product from $89 a month for 75 prompts. Its Sources section has URLs and Domains views with a coverage share.
Strengths
- Sources show which of your tracked competitors appear on each cited page.
- Citations are tracked separately from the overall visibility score.
- SE Visible has a 10-day free trial, and SE Ranking's SEO plans a 14-day trial.
Weaknesses
- Its pages describe no alert when citations drop.
- Next steps are gaps to turn into content, PR or outreach, not ranked actions.
Best for
Teams that want a tool built only for AI visibility, with 75 prompts on its entry plan.
Is a $200 a month citation tracking tool worth keeping?
Keep it only if it shows cited pages by URL, tracks change over time and tells you what to do next. If it only lists domains, a cheaper plan does the same job.
Asky's €99 entry plan groups every cited page by domain and URL and ranks the next actions in one queue across content, technical fixes and third-party sources. On published entry prices, Otterly.AI starts at $29, Ahrefs' custom prompt package at $50, SE Visible at $89, Peec AI at $95 and Semrush at $99 a month.
How did we compare these tools?
We read each vendor's pricing page, product pages and documentation on 29 October 2026, and quoted prices as listed, before tax. Peec AI shows €85 to visitors in the EU, and Semrush's pricing page shows its $99 toolkit billed annually while its knowledge base lists $99 a month.
Where a pricing table marks features with icons only, we cite the vendor's documentation and say so. We looked at citation features on each tool's entry plan, because that is where most teams start.
- Insist on URL-level citations; domain counts hide which page you lost.
- Check who else is cited in the same answers before you rewrite anything.
- When citations drop, check crawler access and technical issues before you change the content.
- Judge a paid tool by what it helps you fix, not by how many sources it lists.
